‘Documess’, poor control and management of document output, is costing European companies around eur8.7bn, according to a report from independent analyst Danka. In UK manufacturing, annual wastage amounts to eur431.6m. In fact, Danka believes that around 0.1% of GDP in European nations is being squandered through inefficient document production. The firm says there are various causes. For example, only a fifth of organisations have a document output management strategy, with IT to measure and attribute output to departments and individuals. It also says that even the smallest companies could achieve dramatic savings by bringing document production under control. Stephen Palmer, Danka’s vice president of product planning and development, says that manufacturers need to “reorganise their document production equipment, and introduce disciplines and software that measure, monitor and control when, where and through what device documents are printed, copied and distributed.” He adds: “Even in central, large company high-volume document production facilities, further efficiencies are achievable, for instance by combining administrative, customer service and promotional output.”
