Microsoft Dynamics delivers on wide-ranging new ERP system

Web services-based interoperability with other systems, role-based ‘composite’ applications, collaboration facilities, business intelligence and RFID supply chain capabilities are among key features of Microsoft Dynamics AX 4.0, the long-awaited update of Axapta ERP.

Launched at the Pasadena, California TechEd 2006 conference in March, Microsoft has now announced general availability of the new ERP system. It is a significant new release. For example, AX uses web services to span the boundaries between structured and unstructured data from different sources, as well as to link standard business processes with ad hoc workflows. In terms of information delivery, they also allow users to get custom RSS feeds and push time-sensitive information to whoever needs it. And they enable the system to work other enterprise IT to provide holistic business views with drill-downs into detail. Microsoft cites SAP and Oracle systems for this. Beyond these, a service-management module automates manufacturing service processes, so that users can, for example, schedule maintenance with production. All of which has come about through Microsoft’s Technical Adoption Program for early adopters, with the company working with users and partners including Russell Athletic, Best Water Technology Group, Optiroc, Columbus IT, Iteration2, Tectura and XAPT Hungary. But it’s what’s behind the scenes that’s just as important – and that’s all about the Microsoft environment. First, the platform itself is very scalable and flexible, being based on SOA (service-orientated architecture) principles with an object-orientated, metadata-driven customisation model. Second there’s an adapter for Microsoft BizTalk Server 2006 so users can link relatively easily with other systems. Third, there’s business intelligence using Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services – as well as exposure of the data model for customisation. And fourth, it’s built on Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services for out-of-the-box collaboration – with, for example, the ability to create composite views across transactions, analysis, workflows and documents. Says Mark Jensen, general manager of Microsoft Dynamics AX: “No matter what industry, customer service is a key differentiator today, so businesses need a platform that provides visibility and quickly adapts to the changing needs of their industry. By delivering this flexibility, Microsoft Dynamics AX 4.0 is transforming business applications to fit the way businesses and users work.”
