Pupils reach for the sky at the Make It in Aerospace schools challenge

The Take Off in Aerospace Enterprise Challenge held in Manchester saw teams of 13 and 14 year old boys and girls from 11 Greater Manchester schools proved they have what it takes to Make It in the North West's dynamic aerospace industry.

The teams set about establishing their own mini-manufacturing businesses with enthusiasm and were tasked with deciding their individual job roles and a specific customer group. They then had to create, build and market and a multi-functional 3D rescue vehicle before selling their ideas in front of a panel of 'Dragons' from the Northwest Aerospace Alliance (NWAA). In a closely run contest, Stretford Grammar School took home the winner's trophy with its all-terrain vehicle named 'The Rhino'. Designed for use in a range of natural disasters their vehicle would use thermal detectors to identify survivors and provide essential supplies to injured victims. The NWAA's Dragons were impressed with the team's confident pitch and impressive profit margin.
