A new forum for manufacturing, engineering and technology businesses in Sussex and Surrey has held its first meeting.

METALL (Manufacturing, Engineering & Technology Alliance) is a new association for companies within the so-called Gatwick Diamond area of Sussex and Surrey. Its launch, at Roffey Park in Horsham, was attended by a sell-out audience of over 30 companies, who between them employ over 5,000 skilled workers in the region.

The event was hosted by chartered accountants Carpenter Box, as well as fellow sponsors asb law and CBSbutler, a local recruitment agency. Attendees discussed the power of collaboration between smaller businesses, and the fact that they can develop ideas quicker than larger organisations. Keynote speeches from Dr Robert Pearson of Cobham Antennas and Dr Zoe Webster of Innovate UK explored the concept of innovation, and how it can be achieved and funded.

Chris Coopey, head of the Manufacturing, Engineering and Technology Group at Carpenter Box (pictured), said: “I was delighted with the response to this first event. The audience were keen to listen to our speakers as well as share their own thoughts and ideas with the group.”

METALL hope that over time, members will use the association to build relationships between business, education, Local Enterprise Partnerships and local government, plus provide a platform for companies to discuss the challenges and issues facing their business.
