Research carried out by Manufacturing Management in April found that a daunting 65% of site managers plan on retiring in the next five years – raising a bigger question of who will fill their roles?
The Manufacturing Management team is a big believer that we need to get more young people interested in this great sector. All clips in this video were filmed in one day, on one visit, with the final video premiered at Manufacturing Management’s fourth annual Manufacturing Champions Awards in December.
During the Champions Award ceremony, Manufacturing Management editor Chris Beck made a rallying call to all delegates to make skills a priority for next year.
“Skills are an issue that we’re all going to have to deal with in the coming years and as the leading lights of manufacturing, I’m throwing down a gauntlet to you,” he said.
“You guys are best placed to inspire the next generation to pick up a high-vis and start a career in manufacturing. As you’ve just seen in the video, we encourage sites to open their doors, not just to other manufacturers, but to young people, be that schools or colleges, to highlight the work you do.
“Be proud of what you do, and shout about the great things you are doing in your sites. No pressure, but the future of manufacturing may well rest largely in the hands of people like you.”
