We preview the keynote event for stopping slips, trips and falls at your factory

The third in this year's series of regional health and safety events will take place at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton on 13-14 October 2010. Offering a free seminar programme, free exhibition and free parking, Health & Safety 10 – North promises to showcase the latest in health and safety information, products and services under one roof. One of the main attractions for visitors will undoubtedly be the free conference and seminar programme which includes sessions organised by the event's official educational partner, the British Safety Council. The seminar topics have been selected to provide maximum benefit to the visitor. On the first day, Nigel Bryson, occupational health consultant, will present the case for effective worker involvement helping to raise safety standards and business performance. Richard Evens, commercial training director for St John Ambulance, will discuss first aid in the workplace and will show that far from being a mere tick-box exercise, first aid training is a life-saving skill. On 14 October, there Kevin Bridges and Zoe Betts from law firm Pinsent Masons will be providing an update on health and safety law. Delegates will hear about potential business risk from legislation such as corporate manslaughter (new sentencing guidelines, personal liability of directors and senior management) emphasising the significance of setting the right tone at the top of the organisation and giving some simple legal preventative measures organisations can take as part of an incident response protocol. Mark Thomas, policy advisor for slips, trips and falls at the Health and Safety Executive will give a presentation looking at how to tackle slips and trips in the workplace. He will outline key issues that contribute to these accidents, describing HSE action in these areas and detailing available guidance. The presentation will also include some case studies from a variety of sectors that have had success in reducing the number of these accidents. Aside from the programme led by the British Safety Council, there will be a further stream of seminars each day staged by event partners 3M, Ansell, Arco and DuPont. These will cover topics as diverse as eye protection, chemical risks and PPE. A full list of seminars can be found on the event website at www.healthandsafetyevents.co.uk, where there is also list of exhibitors. Each year the organisers of the Health and Safety events work with the UK's top safety product and service providers, as well as the leading safety industry organisations, to provide an exhibition and conference programme that is relevant to today's health and safety professional or indeed anyone with a responsibility for safety in the workplace. All of these elements combine to ensure that visitors to the show are offered a valuable experience in terms of knowledge gained, the opportunity to network with other professionals in health and safety and meet the industry's leading organisations. Health & Safety 10 – North represents a great use of time for visitors from virtually any industry and at any level, not just health and safety professionals. The venue has been chosen for ease of access and ample free parking, while the educational content addresses the most topical and pressing safety issues. All seminars are free to attend, but spaces are limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
