Alarming rise in attacks against industrial control systems

A marked increase in the number of attacks targeting industrial control systems has led Idappcom to release a second update to its malicious traffic library.

According to Anthony Haywood, CTO for the network security assessment specialist, this month alone has witnessed 50 attacks pertaining to supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems. The traffic library is used with Idappcom's flagship network security assessment technology Traffic IQ Professional, to assess and enhance the capabilities of network-based security defences. "The threat landscape is in a continual state of flux, but this recent spate of attacks deliberately targeting previously unnoticed industrial systems is extremely concerning and could be an indicator of a new attack trend," comments Haywood. "As larger organisations have become more diligent in respect of their security, attackers attentions are being diverted to smaller, more vulnerable control systems that present an easier, albeit potentially less lucrative target," he explains. Traffic IQ Professional is the only network security assessment and enhancement technology that enables organisations to immediately test and validate if SCADA specific attacks are able to penetrate their networks.
