Asian nations dominate at WorldSkills 2011

UK apprentices netted just two bronze medals as Asian countries dominated the manufacturing events at WorldSkills London 2011.

Team GB's Jake Rambaldini and Ryan Sheridan were our sole medal winners with joint third in the Welding and Mechanical Engineering Design -CAD events. South Korea's team stole the show with six golds in manufacturing challenges including CNC Milling. Japan was just behind with five golds including top spot in the Manufacturing Team Challenge, which saw competitors having to create and test an electric powered bike. Team GB represented by BAE Systems apprentices Rachael Carr, Sam Andrews and Kai Burkitt, finished seventh in the challenge. France and Australia took silver and bronze. David Cameron was among the high profile spectators for the Manufacturing Challenge. Worldskills 2011 was held at London's ExCel last week and pitted competitors from over 50 countries against each other in skills including manufacturing, engineering, plumbing and hairdressing.
