Auto-ID set to grow as industrial automation models change

Auto ID (automatic identification) technology is set to go far beyond barcodes and RFID, as new industrial automation models swell the requirement for active data collection.

So says Gian Paolo Fedrigo, CEO of the industrial automation division of Datalogic. "New levels of automation are necessary to reduce cost, increase productivity and be more competitive," he reasons. "This crosses all industry sectors – from transportation and logistics to manufacturing, and retail to automotive, where flexibility, economy of scale and value-added services drive demand for fully automated processes," he adds. Fedrigo points to "next generation cameras and vision systems" as part of today's auto ID landscape. He gives examples of current sensing ranging from image capture to dimensioning and condition monitoring.
