Business intelligence tools should be pervasive across industry

Manufacturers should no longer think of business intelligence software as complex tools only for business analysts. According to BI developer Qliktech, BI cubes, data warehouses and ETL (extract, transform and load) tools are no longer required.

Says Qliktech UK managing director Andy Honess: “We have a memory-resident BI tool that can take data from multiple sources and build dashboards that are very easy to navigate incredibly quickly.” He adds that compared with the global cross-industry average of 17 months to install and costs of many millions of dollars, his company’s BIT suites take an average of one to two weeks to go live, and generate useful results almost immediately. “The whole intention is to make BI pervasive. We can deliver it to a much wider audience. Our navigation is based on just three colours and it needs no end user training. Also, because we’re memory-resident and with 64bit Intel ready, there’s no data limit. We have BI applications with a billion rows.” Current manufacturing users in the UK include 3M, WD40, Dormer Tools, Scania and Dalehead Foods – with 3M now running “north of 10,000 client users”.
