Employers need educating about hearing loss, say Honeywell

Industrial employers need to be better educated to help prevent “entirely preventable” noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) amongst their workers, say Honeywell.

The company have launched a new range of presentations, posters and articles, entitled ‘Take Care of your Hearing’ to help employers ensure their workers are protected against NIHL in the workplace. NIHL is the most common permanent injury and, being irreparable and irreversible, will dramatically affect a person’s quality of life. The World Health Organisation defines tinnitus as the third most serious non-deadly medical conditions for humans.

“NIHL is entirely preventable, which is why employers must provide proper hearing protection,” said Kjersti Rutlin, hearing conservation manager at Honeywell EMEA. “Employers have a duty of care and, as part of this, workers need to receive effective training so that they know how to use and fit their hearing protection correctly. In doing so, we can avoid incidents that can be detrimental not only to the individual affected but also to their family and friends.”

The ‘Take Care of your Hearing’ campaign demonstrates how exposure to even one extremely high impulse sound can result in permanent hearing damage. The video follows a metal worker who is exposed to a life-changing incident and underlies the importance of effective training in hearing protection.
