Dassault Systèmes has set up a mini website that allows anyone interested to follow the exploits of a French professor as he runs from Paris to Beijing, and also to take part in a relay race using virtual reality, boosting the company’s donations to a sports charity

. Professor Philippe Fuchs is a Virtual Reality researcher and professor at the Ecole des Mines de Paris and also an experienced runner. Participants can go to a web site www.3ds.com/VplusR and follow his progress. At the same time, they can create avatars with their own faces, run them for 1km and pass the relay onto friends to build up a 3D relay team. Dassault Systèmes has already announced that they will donate an equivalent of €50,000 to Sports Without Borders in the form of pro-bono work to help find support that will help the charity widen its scope of programs in Latin America, Africa and Asia. For each km run by Fuchs or the avatars, the company will add another euro to the donation. In addition, the Marseille Motion Science Institute, in collaboration with Dassault Systèmes, will use biometric data gathered during Fuchs’ run to verify that their model of a virtual foot behaves like a real one. The intention is that the resulting proven model will be used to advance sports medicine and equipment design and optimise training.
