David Brown, chief executive officer at the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) for the past nine years, is stepping down from the role from 15 July 2016.

Membership is understood to have grown by 75% during Brown’s tenure. The organisation’s council has praised him for his vision, energy and innovations, such as a corporate partners scheme and the appointment of Senior Ambassadors to represent IChemE across the world.

Brown said: “IChemE is embarking on a further programme of change which will take several years. After nine fulfilling years at the helm, supported by a great team of staff and countless volunteers from among our members, I want to give a new CEO the opportunity to shape and lead that programme and take IChemE through towards it centenary in 2022.”

He added that he would continue to be active on behalf of science and engineering. A search for a successor is underway.

Brown is a Cambridge science graduate with a PhD in polymers and post-doctoral work in engineering materials for surgery.
