IET to host open house for young engineers

On 29 July, the Lloyds Bank Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre (AMTC), will be hosting an open day for the next generation of young engineers.

The Engineering Open House Day is being held as part of the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s (IET’s) Engineer a Better World campaign, which is designed to demonstrate the career opportunities that are available to young engineers.

A number of organisations will be exhibiting at the Open House Day, with guests having the chance to directly ask engineers about their career experiences and the appeal of the industry as a whole. There will also be tours, workshops and presentations from some of the industry’s most inspirational people.

IET research from 2015 showed that 71% of children would be interested in a career in engineering when shown inspirational information about the number of opportunities available. Demand for engineers far outstrips the supply, and only 9% of engineers are female, so the IET is hoping the open day will inspire the next generation to join the industry.

Alastair Johnstone, managing director of Bosch Rexroth, the host sponsor of the event, said: “We’re excited to host an event for the IET’s Engineering Open House Day this summer. It will be an excellent opportunity to showcase some of the fantastic opportunities that a job in the engineering sector can hold. Engineering Open House Day is a truly great initiative which we hope will inspire and encourage a diverse mix of children to consider a career in the industry.”

Naomu Climer, president of the IET, added: “Engineering Open House Day is a great way to show parents and young people the diverse variety of exciting engineering careers on offer all over the country, while also celebrating the valuable work that engineers do every day.”

The Engineering Open House Day is being held at the Lloyds Bank Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre (AMTC) at Ansty Park in Coventry on 29 July. For more information, and to register your interest, visit http://www.engineer-a-better-world.org/engineering-open-house-day.
