International Timber logs all stock on RF barcode system

Timber shipments and stock levels on International Timber’s 18-acre site at Grangemouth in Scotland are now being monitored and tracked by RF wireless barcode systems.

The system provides International Timber with accurate and up-to-date information of goods received, timber stocks and their location, and has resolved problems of missing or lost stock. It has also improved customer service, enabling instant checks on the amount, type and location of any timber. The company imports wood from all over the world – with around 3,000 packs or 12,000 cubic metres arriving through the port every month. They are now barcode labelled and scanned, immediately updating International Timber’s inventory of stock on the Grangemouth site. “Timber is traditionally a very low tech industry but Barcoding.co.uk has been instrumental in building what we believe is the most advanced system of its type in the industry,” says Alan Mullarkey, IT support manager at International Timber. “The wireless and automated data collection gives us an instant check on all timber stock and movements into the site so we can manage the business better, more effectively with minimum errors whilst saving on time,” he adds. In brief detail, the system is based n Rugged Hand Held Products 7400 mobile data scanners and the RF network collects data for transfers and goods receipt to an ADP Kerridge ERP system. Barcoding.co.uk installed 18 Wi-Fi access points with two lamp post structures to ensure complete coverage across the site. Barcoding.co.uk also supplied an RF to Ethernet bridge to connect wireless Zebra printers for label printing at remote locations.
