One of Europe's leading industrialists has joined The Manufacturing Institute as an associate partner.

Frank Hayden has led the strategic and operational transformation of some great engineering and manufacturing businesses, including Land Rover, BMW, Airbus, BAE Systems, and Rolls Royce, taking them from high performing businesses to world-class benchmarks.

Hayden, 52, from Warrington, has also taken on leadership roles on large-scale international projects, including the BMW Mini, Airbus A380, Eurofighter Typhoon, F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and Rolls-Royce engines for the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350XWB.

He is also professor of advanced manufacturing at the University of Central Lancashire, providing leadership for the University's plan to double the number of engineering students and strengthening their research links with industry.

He has already hit the ground running for The Manufacturing Institute with an Enterprise Excellence benchmarking project at a major engineering company in Yorkshire.

Hayden said: "I've been working in industry for 30 years and have spent the last two years as an independent consultant with a wide variety of clients from around the world.

"I've travelled from the western states of the USA to the Northern Territories of Australia working on very interesting projects and helping companies with their business problems. I'm delighted to be back in the North West with The Manufacturing Institute helping companies in the UK."

He added: "It's great being involved in international programmes but I'm very much looking forward to helping UK companies with their international competitiveness. Coaching can have a real impact on leadership. When I talk to people the ideas to solve problems are often in their own heads – they just need bringing out."

Julie Madigan, CEO of the Manchester-based Manufacturing Institute, said: "The Manufacturing Institute is delighted to welcome Frank on board as an Associate Partner after a long association with us serving as a non-executive director on our subsidiary board.

"Frank has had every dream job there is in manufacturing, culminating in his final role as Global Director of Manufacturing for Rolls Royce. He brings an incredible depth of experience to the team from the aerospace and automotive sectors and has a breadth of perspective from the seniority of the positions he has held."
