Logistics company supports Scottish cycle safety initiative

NYK Logistics (UK) has joined forces with Police in Glasgow to drive home a vital road safety awareness message to cyclists on Scotland’s roads.

Delivery vehicles operating from NYK Logistics’ Glasgow site now feature bright yellow warning notices on the rear doors that are aimed at stopping cyclists from attempting to overtake on the left. A combination of around 80 trailers and rigid trucks are displaying the warning signs. The joint initiative between NYK Logistics and Strathclyde Police has been adopted in a bid that to prevent un-necessary injuries and deaths on roads. Don Malcolm, Manager at NYK Logistics’ Glasgow site, said: “NYK Logistics’ drivers are trained to be alert at all times but a cyclist passing a large goods vehicle on the inside may at times become invisible to the driver. “Consequently, as a major operator of vehicles in the UK, anything we can do to help create awareness and reduce potential accidents on the road is important.” The system is similar to a scheme already successfully operating in London. Constable Mark Caldwell of the Traffic Education and Support Team said: “It is really key to get the message across to cyclists and I’d like to thank Don and NYK Logistics for their backing.” He also explained the reasoning behind the scheme: “Commuting by bike is cheap, environmentally friendly and reduces congestion, however it is not without risk. “Cyclists are among the most vulnerable of road users, yet some continue to take chances with their own safety by passing large vehicles on the inside. “This is particularly dangerous near junctions where a large vehicle may turn left across the path of the cyclist with serious consequences. Tragically, such incidents have resulted in serious injury and death in the past. “By positioning the highly visible notices right where cyclists can see them, we hope to be able to prevent them from taking unnecessary risks.”
