Two Northamptonshire companies have been fined a total in excess of £220,000 following an accident in August 2013, in which an employee was killed while fitting roofing sheets onto a factory roof in Wellingborough.

A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation found failings in operations at A-Lift Crane Hire Limited, of Wilby, and Premier Roofing Systems Limited, of Corby. Both companies were fined by Northampton Crown Court following the accident. While working on the roof, the employee fell through an unprotected skylight and was killed.

The HSE investigation into the incident found that preventative measures that should have been put in place to ensure a safe working environment on the roof were not adhered to.

Premier Roofing Systems Limited pleaded guilty to breaching Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. The company was fined £140,250 and ordered to pay £41,428 of costs.

A-Lift Crane Hire Limited were found guilty of breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, and were fined £83,300. They were also ordered to pay £21,500 in costs.
