Port Talbot steel workers’ future to be decided in Mumbai

A delegation including members of the Community union and Labour MP Stephen Kinnock has flown to Tata headquarters in India to fight for the future of workers at the company’s Port Talbot steel works.

They held a meeting with senior members of the Tata Steel group ahead of a crunch meeting set to take place today (Tue 29 March) that will decide the future of the plant. An open letter to Tata Steel, supporting the steel workers and urging the company to protect their jobs, has so far been signed by more than 35,000 people.

There are fears the Indian owners will take the decision to close the plant, currently losing around £1million each week, permanently. In January they announced that 1,000 UK were to be lost, with Port Talbot facing the majority of the cuts – prompting fears the site would be closed in the near future.

Aberavon MP Kinnock told the BBC he wanted Tata Steel to “hold its nerve to back the plan and we can move forward, get the steelworks back to break even and then, over a longer period, getting it really operating in surplus again”.
