Renishaw has supplied a new additive manufacturing machine to Mott Corporation to help increase its design and production capabilities.

Renishaw supports Mott Corporation with AM system

Dubbed, RenAM 500 Flex, the machine reduces setup times and improves performance metrics of components, according to Mott Corporation.

The machine is configurable with one (500S) or four (500Q) high power 500 W lasers, and offers automatic or flexible powder and waste handling.

The lasers can be used in either modulated or continuous wave regimes - making them more customisable. The RenAM 500 Flex still uses the same gas flow system and precision digital optics seen in other RenAM 500 series but now can let users swap the metal powder feedstock in less time.

It reduced machine turnaround and setup times by over 50 per cent, while improving the standard deviation of performance metrics by approximately 30 per cent in certain cases, Renishaw claims.

Mott Corporation was seeking a for a machine that contains open architecture to enable parameter editing. The company, previously, produced components using three compaction methods: axial, isostatic, and rolling but identified laser powder bed fusion as the best technique for its needs that it could not produce.

“Renishaw’s philosophy is that process parameters should be as customisable as possible,” said John Laureto, Americas business manager at Renishaw. “Using the RenAM 500 Flex, Mott Corporation was able to optimize its processes for specific applications and can tweak the parameters as needed for novel projects.”

Mott Corporation is US-based developer of metal filtration systems for healthcare, aerospace and energy sectors. It offers material selection various operating conditions such as bioreactor environments and chemical processing/refinement.

Mott Corporation was acquired by engineering products designer, IDEX Corporation, in September 2024.

Renishaw is a British engineering company that manufactures coordinate-measuring machines and machine tool products.
