Scheme launched to address R&D skills gap

The first phase of a new higher apprenticeship to help address the skills shortage in the R&D sector is to be launched by Pera Training.

The higher apprenticeship in Research and Development, the equivalent of a degree, will, says the provider of manufacturing apprenticeships, provide employees and young people with access to a nationally recognised qualification and new vocational career path in the science, engineering and technology sectors. Countrywide consultations to set out how the new qualification will add value and competiveness to businesses and how small firms can take part are will begin later this week. "The qualification is within the R&D pathway in the Semta Advanced Manufacturing Higher Apprenticeship Framework, and will allow employers to focus resources on the skills that will help lead to growth and economic recovery," according to a statement from Pera. Steve Gledhill, Project Manager at Pera Training said: "By radically expanding the number of higher level apprenticeships, we will start to put practical learning on a level footing with academic study." Pera is looking to work with over 150 employers and engage 250 apprentices, of which it is hoped approximately 60% will come from SMEs.
