British Energy’s nuclear materials are now being tracked electronically, following completion of its company-wide compliance system.

The new system, based on Simatic, IT from Siemens MES (manufacturing execution system), is now accounting for all material movements, cataloguing and locating nuclear material in accordance with EC regulations. British Energy, which produces around one-sixth of the nation’s power, says the work has been phased in over the last 18 months across its eight nuclear sites, which have a combined capacity of 9,600MW. A spokesperson said: “Digital Applications International and Siemens have delivered a well-executed project, which has deployed a high quality system across our plants. We are pleased with the effectiveness of the implementation and are already seeing its benefits.” Mark Perry, for Siemens MES UK, says: “Simatic IT is an ideal solution for this sort of track and trace requirement, because it can be integrated across all components, it provides optimal quality, and it ensures production efficiency across all the facilities by synchronising and coordinating the functions provided by the individual components.”
