SME exhaust maker fired up for growth

The implementation of a new dedicated production line for volume manufacturing, the introduction of 5S and an ongoing project to deal with back office issues are among the initiatives helping Sheffield-based Exhausts UK towards fresh turnover targets.

Turnover has increased 15% with a further 18% increase forecast in the next financial year, taking it to almost £1m; one new job has already been added and a further two positions are on the way. The business, which manufactures high quality performance exhausts systems and was established in 2004 by siblings Rachel and Peter Jarvis (pictured), is now turning its attention to increasing exports. "Currently, exports make up 5% of our turnover, but we are confident there is a demand for performance exhausts across Europe," said Rachel. The changes at the company have been undertaken under the guidance of the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS), which was called in to advise on gearing up production when an order was won to supply exhausts to Subaru UK dealerships. They had been enthusiastically taken on board by the company's 12 staff, she added. "Everything is much more organised and departments now work together more effectively and this has resulted in the whole process running smoothly from orders being taken through to delivery."
