Swedish car manufacturer Volvo (now part of Ford Motors) has selected SGI’s Origin 3800 server to boost its computing power for crash simulation analysis. 25 development engineers at the company’s Advanced Safety Centre in Gothenburg will use Origin to evaluate construction proposals during the evening, which are then analysed the next day. “Our investment in a new SGI server helps us achieve our long term strategy to maintain the leading position in crash simulation and safety,” said Anders Broo, project manager at Volvo Cars. “Our safety strategy includes two areas: high performance computing in an early phase of the development of a new car model and real-life testing. The extra computing performance delivered by SGI gives us the opportunity to strengthen our advanced safety centre in Gothenburg and helps us to guarantee that the end product will be dependably safe,” he added.
