The Welsh economy secretary is to visit China this week in a bid to strengthen trade links between the two countries, it has been announced.

Ken Skates will be joined by a trade mission of 18 Welsh companies as they all look to increase their trade relationships with the Asian country.

The economy secretary will also meet with Chinese companies and government representatives to discuss how trade links between the two countries can be strengthened and to discuss how Wales can further increase its exports.

Skates announced that he intended to visit the country in January while at the North Wales Export Forum.

“China is a huge global force and one that Wales is keen to cement its already strong links with,” Skates said.

“Wales has a huge amount to offer as a trading partner, a tourist destination and cultural partner. Following the decision to leave the EU it is more important than ever that we reach out to China and other international partners and continue to work to build a stronger and fairer Welsh economy for all.”

Last week, Scotland’s external affairs secretary Fiona Hyslop visited Japan to strengthen business and trade between the two countries.
