Somerset-based Jasun Envirocare says outdoor air pollution plays a significant role in indoor air quality (IAQ) and it is supporting Clean Air Day to help raise awareness of this.
Why Clean Air Day Matters: Understanding the Impact of Air Pollution
Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) Division Manager at Jasun Envirocare, Jason Day, explains: “Run by Global Action Plan, Clean Air Day is the UK’s largest awareness campaign highlighting the need to tackle air pollution. It offers people the chance to find out more about air pollution, share information, and discuss how we can make air cleaner and healthier for everyone.
“Unless you work outside, you will spend roughly just 10% of your time outdoors. Much of our life is indoor-based – we work inside, rest inside and pursue most of our leisure activities inside. However, the contaminates that are present outdoors are in our workplaces, homes and leisure spaces too. There’s an exchange of air between the outside and indoors when you open a door or window, or through ventilation systems.
“Indoor air fine particulate matter (PM) comes mostly from outdoor air, especially in urban areas where traffic is constant. Many studies have shown PM affects our health and wellbeing far more than any other form of pollutant.
“What is often unacknowledged is that in heavily polluted areas, such as industrial zones and beside busy main roads, without air filtration, more than 90% of ambient PM levels monitored outdoors, occur indoors too.
How Efficient Air Filters Protect Health and Save Energy
“Applying correctly selected, efficient air filters in ventilation systems can significantly reduce the impact of PM exposure and the burden of disease (BoD), which is a measure of life expectancy and the quality of life you can expect.
“We’re offering firms who use air filters a free, no obligation to buy, energy saving audit to find out how they can improve their filtration while also saving energy, which is good for the planet, as well as their finances.
“This will also help them protect their teams, customers, service users or patients, from air pollution and other potentially harmful, airborne particles while indoors.
The Urgent Need to Address Air Pollution in the UK
The Clean Air Day website states how air pollution causes up to 36,000 deaths in the UK each year. It’s the largest environmental health risk we face today and is recognised as such by the World Health Organisation and the Government.
Jason adds: “Our work covers the improvement of internal air quality but we’re naturally very keen to see improvements in overall air quality and a reduction in pollution.
“Research has shown there are huge links between external and internal air quality and there’s a strong connection with Clean Air Day and what we do and our mantra, which is: Clean Air Matters. We’re a family run business and a large employer in this area, and at our other site in Waterlooville in Hampshire, as well as in Europe. We care about our planet, our families and each other.
Who Needs to Prioritise Indoor Air Hygiene?
“As well as cleaning up the air outside, it’s also vital to protect our health by ensuring the air within buildings is as clean as possible too.
“Retailers, employers with office-based teams, those in hospitality and catering, anyone who has personnel working together inside, or welcomes customers into their building, all need to maintain good indoor air hygiene.”
