Alcumus launches new H&S guide

1 min read

In the hope of promoting a positive health and safety culture Alcumus, a leading provider of software-led risk management solutions has launched a free guide for manufacturers to explore how businesses can improve safety culture and encourage awareness organisation wide.

With the risks the manufacturing industry carries, it is crucial to include health and safety at the forefront of company culture. Under section 2 of the Health and Safety at Work act 1974, employers have a duty to provide suitable instruction, training and supervision to enable employees to carry out their job safely. 2018/19 saw 105 businesses prosecuted for health and safety failures, resulting in fines in excess of £21 million.

Alcumus’ free guide offers advice and guidance on a range of subjects, helping employers to understand their obligations and the solutions on offer.

The free guide covers:

  • The signs of a poor health and safety culture
  • Implementing a positive safety culture from the top down
  • Training and responsibility
  • Protection against work-related ill health
  • Promoting a safety first culture with near-miss reporting
  • Implementing software to improve processes

Workforces with a positive health and safety culture are often more safe and successful than those without. Implementing a strong level of training allows workers to acquire the skills, knowledge and attitude, enabling them to perform their duties safely. From a business perspective, it also helps to avoid financial implications, reputational damage, loss of productivity and a demotivated workforce.

Tracking training records within health and safety software can also help manage training more robustly. Not only can the software improve record keeping, including storing certificates, notifications can also be sent to relevant parties, providing a reminder when training is due to be renewed.

Helen Jones, Managing Director Certification and Software Division at Alcumus said, “Installing a software based system allows the user to record all data in real time, which vastly improves the accuracy. Utilising a software system makes it faster to gain insights as it eliminates the time-consuming process of manually gathering data. These benefits create a more positive outlook on health and safety culture by eliminating the admin burden felt with paper based systems. Improving this outlook of the industry will ultimately save lives.”
