How too much bad cop can arrest your CI development

1 min read

Discover how flipping your management style between good and bad cop can help create a powerful improvement culture at the WM Manufacturing Conference (WMMC) on 20-21 November.

Kevin Eyre of lean consultancy, S A Partners, will reveal the underappreciated importance of language to CI success at WMMC. Delegates will be challenged to examine how their own management bias towards listening, telling or telling their people off influences factory behaviour. The session will reinforce the principles of Eyre's recently published insight paper 'Shift the Dialogue- Shift the Culture'. Leaders severely underestimate how the style in which they address employees influences company culture, the paper says. Command and control styles like admonishing and advocating are typical of companies who have not attempted continuous improvement, the paper reflects. Managers must learn to adapt to a more progressive coaching style through inquiry to compliment their CI journey, the paper recommends. The 'Shift the Dialogue- Shift the Culture' paper concludes: "Changing the way we talk is not a simple matter, interactions which strive to get other people to think for themselves, so they become forever better problem solvers..takes deep listening..Not all of us have a natural tendency to do this consistently well when the situation demands it; it takes understanding and practice."
