RDC doubles storage capacity with new pallet racking system

IT equipment disposal and recycling business RDC has consolidated four warehousing locations into one 340,000 sq ft facility which has been kitted out with a narrow aisle pallet racking system from Jungheinrich.

With more than 7,200 pallet locations, the new purpose-built facility in Braintree, Essex, has given RDC twice the storage capacity of its previous sites combined. After a tender process, RDC awarded the supply and install contract to Jungheinrich, better known for its forklift trucks and materials handling equipment portfolio, but which also has a long established racking and storage systems division. The RDC racking scheme is used to store a range of computer hardware which has been through the RDC refurbishment process and is awaiting delivery to a new user. The racking system is six levels high with an aisle width of 2,250 mm, which allows picking to be undertaken by lift truck from the upper beams at the same time as workers pick faster-moving lines from the ground and first floor levels. The aisles are served by articulated forklift truck technology. RDC's Chris Garn said: "The Jungheinrich installation team was very professional. They worked quickly and efficiently, and the final project sign off process was very impressive. The project was completed on budget and ahead of schedule." From initial project design using CAD technology to hand over, Jungheinrich supplies a complete range of racking systems and accessories, including adjustable pallet racking, drive-in and drive through systems, mobile, cantilever and high bay racking, pallet and carton live storage as well as long span and small parts shelving.
