Manufacturing Management Show: A show of strength

3 mins read

A bold new age in best practice beckons this November with the launch of the Manufacturing Management Show. Max Gosney dons cape and explores an event promising a shot of super powers for site management teams .

Nine months to launch and the Manufacturing Management Show is looking every inch the superhero depicted in its marketing literature.

An ensemble of top industry names including Bentley Motors, Coca Cola and Microsoft are lined up to unleash a wealth of best practice at the event which takes place on 23-24 November at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry.

The show combines a keynote conference, exhibition of the latest plant and hands-on workshops for a multi-faceted hit of manufacturing management best practice.

The conference element will kick off with exclusive insight from Bentley Motors on how the luxury car maker is proactively tackling skills shortages at its Crewe site. Tom Russell, senior development officer- Future Talent at Bentleys will reveal how the firm has pioneered a ‘grow your own’ apprenticeship programme to foster highly sought-after skillsets in mechatronics, leather finishing and paint.

The principle of sharing hints and tips with the wider industry at the show is fundamental to the collective success of UK manufacturing said Russell. “Being involved in events like the Manufacturing Management Show (MMS) are vital. They allow us to continuously improve, develop and share our best practice across the sector as well as learn from other industry leaders.”

While Bentley will discuss skills challenges: the broader remit of MMS’ two-day conference programme is to address all aspects of successful manufacturing management from deploying 5S to finding the right forklift truck. Maintenance is among the key content themes (alongside CI/leadership, technology, energy, health & safety, materials handling and skills).

And banishing downtime through smarter asset care will be the focus for Lee Baker, maintenance manager at Coca-Cola’s Wakefield plant. Baker will detail the essential ingredients of a maintenance strategy and discuss how you can better engage employees in essential tasks through an easy-to-use asset score card.

Whether you’re a TPM guru or a maintenance novice- the session could offer a source of inspiration said Trevor Newman, supply chain operations director at Coca-Cola’s Wakefield site. “When out at a conference or event, you can always learn. There is no such thing as a perfect factory. It’s vital to get out of the factory and attend this type of event in order to keep on improving.”

As is adopting the latest plant on your production floor according to manufacturing technology experts. Microsoft’s Phillip Watson [change to?] will deliver a session that takes a look at a raft of latest technology heading for the factory floor. Watson will examine buzzwords like Industry 4.0 and The Internet of Things and discuss what artificially intelligent factory kit will mean for manufacturing teams eager to enhance manufacturing quality and add value into products.

Learning won’t begin and end at the Manufacturing Management Show’s conference programme. Visitors who step out onto the show floor will find four workshop theatres nestled in-between rows of exhibition stands displaying the latest site equipment and services.

A quick scan of the badge and you will be able to sit in on supplier-led seminars offering hands-on advice with a range of crux business issues. Workshop topics include training opportunities for upskilling your workforce with JTJ Workplace Solutions, mastering ERP implementations with 123 Insight, forklift truck guidance with Toyota Material Handling UK, tips on creating a high safety culture with Arco, MRO hints and tips with Brammer and maintenance advice from RS Components.

Sit in and you never know what you might learn says Guy Amoroso, MD at 123 Insight. “There is no substitute for seeing something for yourself and being able to ask questions to those that have the answers through direct experience. Having the time outside the pressures of the daily environment gives you the opportunity to think clearly; to fully explore and discuss things in a relaxed and informal atmosphere.”

The Manufacturing Management Show is an extension of the lean manufacturing philosophy of gemba or ‘go-see’. To problem solve you must first go to the place where the value is created. And amid the rows of exhibition stands, workshops and conference seminars at the show, you will discover suppliers and peers who know a thing or two about adding value to people and processes. “Taking time to focus on the direction of the business is vital,” advocates Neil Lloyd of legal firm FBCMB who are exhibiting at the show. “Shows like MMS give you the opportunity to listen to best practices and then pick and choose which ones would suit your business.”
